Questions Poem by Cliff Barker

Questions

Who reasons why he acted so foolishly?
Left never to know where it may have led.
The fire of love was all consuming inside,
But the future lay opaque, unsure, and unknowing.

What would they have become over time?
A couple, together embraced for the ages,
Or a couple, forever bitterly estranged.
Too soon apart, they were never to realize their fate.

When they last entwined in passion
Bittersweet softness with heartfelt kisses.
Nervous and afraid, yet he knew not at all,
A siren's song was calling him to an abyss.

Where were they to pass each other again?
He longed for the fortune to experience
The warmth and pleasures of the other.
Truly, he'd never forgotten this lover.

Why must the world be so cruel he pondered?
Unkind in its timing, and mocking in its trials.
Today finds him bound by his heart,
His haunting dreams unresolved, just beyond his grasp.

How is one to reconcile the past,
When bound to a debt of the present.
A man destined to forever speak softly, in the cool night air,
To the one who forever will hold a piece of his heart.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
First post and thought I'd share. I've also never been critiqued and this was a spur of the moment piece. The story is that I've recently resumed contact with THE ONE. I let her get away so many years ago. I've come to find that she, like I, moved on but always kept an eye on the horizon for us to reunite. We've waited too long and realize that where we are, and who we are, is where we need to be.
