Racing Galleons Poem by Gordon D Wilkinson

Racing Galleons

Rating: 5.0

Muscular racing galleons
Mares, geldings and stallions
Over the flat green grass
Opponents many ahead to pass
Wild-eyed rides reigned in tight
Waiting time to join the fight
Ears pricked, nostrils flared
Every effort, none spared
Flashing hooves of steel
Side by side, full of zeal
Inching forward nosing ahead
Racing hard on this ground so dead
Lathered flanks speckled white
Bursting lungs prove the fight
Yard after bottomless yard
The favourite on the card
Starting his run for the line
Did I kick, just in time?
Like an endless eternity
Catching up slowly, can you see?
Right on the line the camera flash
Horses pass like a rash
So close to call
Wonder who won it all
Loudspeakers results they peal
Elation for the jockey is real
Another hard race run
Winning is so much fun
