Rebellious Poem by Claudia Nkhata

Rebellious

I am the girl that wakes up at five AM every day of the week
I start up my day by jogging just so I keep myself fit because I love my figure
As everyone watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because in their world only athletes do that sort of thing
I even stopped wondering why people look at me with strange eyes and say to me
You are not normal…oh! That's odd

I am the girl that eats twice a day and takes no meat, no junk and no artificial beverages
And if I do, I take less than three eggs per week and take water every two hours
As everyone watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
I watch cholesterol levels in my body in order to avoid chronic diseases
Because in my world what you eat today affects your future health
I even stopped wondering why people look at me with strange eyes and say to me
You are not normal…oh! That's odd

I am that rebellious girl that beat curfew by breaking nights
Because I know that what they don't want me to do in the dark I can do in light
This they will never understand till they learn to trust me
Everyone will keep watching at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because in their world if a girl stays out late she's with some guy having sex
C'mon that shouldn't be the case
I even stopped wondering why they look at me with strange eyes and say to me
You are not normal…oh! That's odd

I am the girl that does any decent job for money, wash dishes, mop floors you name it
Because I know that clean money doesn't easily come merely by itself
As everyone watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because in my world there is no sweet without sweat
I even stopped wondering why people look at me with strange eyes and say to me
You are not normal…oh! That's odd

I am the girl that doesn't bleach my skin for I love my beautiful black skin
I cut my hair short and do not straighten nor comb it for I love it short black and curled
When I walk I hold my head high and upright like a Goddess of the highest mighty
Because when I look in the mirror I want to see the real me NOT an idea of what I should be
As everyone watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because in my world a woman must have in her the purity and dignity
I even stopped wondering why people look at me with strange eyes and say to me
You are not normal…oh! That's odd

I am that girl that will make you realize that you will end up in the grave if you use your body to bring food to the table
You spend lonely nights in the cold including rainy nights
Not even afraid of pneumonia other than sexual transmitted infections
take on hundreds of men whose names you cannot even remember
to leave a dent on your precious body
As everyone watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because I know that in my world if you won't stop now, doom is certainly after you
Yet you still wonder why people look at you with strange eyes and say to you
You can do better than that oh! That's true

I am that girl they call bustard because I was born out of wedlock
Oh I am so lucky that others gave me a fancy name, I am called an illegitimate child
What the heck it's all the same!
My mother solely went beyond her means just so she could provide for me
Raise me up to what I am today…humble and responsible
In short she bravely took over your job as you vanished into thin air
As the world watched at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because they know that you are just a man like any other, selfish and heartless!
Count yourself lucky that I am told not all men are like you
I even stopped wondering why people look at me with strange eyes and say to me
Your mother was irresponsible, irresponsible? Oh! That's odd

I am the girl that gives hope to the hopeless
As the world watches at arm's length in flabbergasted state
Because in my world what one man can do anyone can too
All it takes is a little faith and courage…just believe
You must stop wondering why people look at you with strange eyes and say to you
You are not normal…because that's not odd
