Refreshments-Tent, Sports-Day Poem by Stephen Brian Brady

Refreshments-Tent, Sports-Day

at the other side
of another tent
and just a flap away
from trestle-tables
strawberries and teas

as civilized heroics
play out
albeit in a strictly minor key

the sacrificial goat
gets wind of
the greenest grass he'd never see

distant cheers
and the scampering of feet
last gasps
chomping at the bits
of every pastry treat
with extra cream

now down on his knees
in goat-heaven soon maybe
he'll see how it might have been
the hundred metres final
for the under seventeens
