Refugees Poem by johannes lewinsky

Refugees

How you have been wrenched been
Wrenched from your homes
From your scenes of hope and love

How compelled been to be
Distributed across continents
You cannot know nor love

To stumble
Grappling your effects and selves
To yourselves blind
With neither
Hope nor love

This was your lot was
Given not asked
but thrust upon
not above from
but from the arrogant

peevishness
of benighted souls lost
to themselves lost
and their humanity lost

who never did learn
what it was to be human is
but act solely on the impulse
of their once inherited
and now insane conditioning

why would you not
i hear you now
in the still night dark now
shriek to the clouds lost
and the stars lost
of your loss

of capacity to be
condemned but
to a futureless becoming

where no hope is but what you can
indigenously excavate
and your greatest challenge is

not to harbour hate harbour
for all of those that have
this calamity wreaked upon you
