Remembering How You Sound Poem by Freddy Ibarra

Remembering How You Sound

I remember what it was like to breathe
feel the sun split across my face
the taste of succulent fruit dancing on my lips

Now I drown
The sky has never seemed so far away
The flavor clawing at my stomach

I remember what it was like to breathe
The wind whipping across my hair
Free like your kiss painted on my cheek

Now I drown
Your dream stained across my face
I'm choking, gasping on nothing

I'm scared I'll never breathe again
the whispering orange waning darker
My lungs st-stuttering in the water

The ocean embraces me like an old friend
I'm so nervous the words won't come out
I just want to breathe again.
