Rita Relates 1928 Poem by Terry Collett

Rita Relates 1928

You sat
on the back bumper
of Howard's old truck
with faded flower
patterned dress on.

He seemed happy
you being there
holding your hand
gazing at the horizon.

Open neck
white shirt
black trousers.

Quite the gentleman
you thought
you off
for the day
from the store.

The weather fine
sun in the sky
and his sister
took a photo
with her old camera
box like thing
she'd decided
to bring.

She was
the chaperone
you guessed
just to make sure
nothing happened
that ought not.

He spoke
of going
to New York
and trying his luck.

But all you
could think of
was his sister gone
and sex
in the back
of the truck.
