Robbie's Car Poem by Bonnie Moore

Robbie's Car

A Parody

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That an auto there lived whom you may know
By the name of M G B; -
And this auto it lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child, and it was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But I loved it with a love that was more than love-
I and my M G B—
With a love that the wingéd mercury
Coveted it and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
The rain blew out of a cloud, rusting
My beautiful M G B;
So that its high-born mechanic came
And bore it away from me,
To shut it up in a garage,
In this kingdom by the sea.

The T R 3, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying it and me—
Yes! —that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the rain came out of the cloud by night,
Rusting and choking my M G B.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the T R 3 in Heaven above,
Nor the Spiders down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful M G B.

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful M G B;
And the stars never rise, but I see the glass eyes
Of the beautiful M G B; -
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling-my charming-my life and my pride,
In its garage there by the sea-
In its tomb by the sounding sea.
