A rock once sat upon the ground,
Immovable and still, never to be found,
But as it watched the birds take flight,
It longed to join them, with all its might.
'I wish I could fly, ' the rock did say,
To soar above the earth, and feel the sway
Of the wind and the sky, the clouds so white,
To see the world from a different height.
It dreamed of wings upon its back,
And of taking off with a mighty crack,
Breaking free from the earth below,
And into the endless blue to go.
But alas, the rock was heavy and still,
And flying was not its fate, but always will,
It stayed on the ground, rooted in place,
Watching the birds, with envy on its face.
Yet, the rock did not give up hope,
For even though it could not cope,
With the weightlessness of the sky,
It found joy in simply trying to fly.
For every day it practiced hard,
And slowly it began to discard,
Its longing for the sky up high,
And learned to love the ground, and not to sigh.
And though it never did take flight,
The rock found peace, in its own right,
Content to be exactly what it was,
A solid and steadfast, earthbound mass.
