Parthenons of our finest endeavor
Built, stone by stone
The impregnable heights of our best
Intention, yet
Even marble and granite
May crumble
In time.
The cruel blast of narcissistic need
Cuts through the crack of
Column and pediment
Sand and mortar mortal to the last.
Finally broken, the roof collapse
Statues tumble, Athena and Apollo
Torso and limb, decapitate in twilight
A solitary stone left standing
In ruin of a lifetime
Darkness moving in
Like a wolf between the trees.
