Sad Eyes Poem by Stephen James

Sad Eyes

His days were quite grey yesterday, today & tomorrow,
Never much joy but likewise never much sorrow.

Then one day his dull world lit up like the dawn of the sun
It was the first time he saw her and yet knew she was the one

Over the following months they became such great friends
They spoke to each other most days from the start to the end

They laughed and they cried, sharing each others highs & lows
And seemed a happy couple to those that did not know

To him it seemed she always smiled as he appeared
He thought, that to her it was he that was becoming reviered

It was without doubt the happiest time in his life
Surely it could only be better if one day she was his wife

Then came the next time that she went on holiday,
So he went with his heart and said he'd miss her while she was away.

There was initially silence as he awaited the reply
But when it did come he wished he could hide somewhere & die

She said that she'd never felt that way about him
And could only be friends which he took full on the chin

But it got worse for she now avoided him as much as she could
Almost as much as only one's worst enemy would

How could he had misjudged it and got it so wrong,
The best friend he's likely to ever have was forever now gone.

The loneliness he feels could drive anyone mad
So because he knows what's its like to be so very sad

His new aim in life is to seek out those also uncheerful
And do his utmost to help them become so much less fearful

But if you look into his eyes there's no longer a spark,
Because until the end of his life his world will be dark.
