Safer In The Forest Poem by Lora Cooley

Safer In The Forest

I've been watching a slow thaw come around
Waiting in the cold alone
Thinking too much of you
There's still more snowfall saying this winter will never end
Neither wane nor wear
And the sunshine flirts like lovers
The summers just preted to only warm the air
It's that feeling here
It's too near death- the highway moan
Hiding in buildings of both wooden and stone
This place
I've been thinking of exile
Hit the highway and head North
And don't turn back
Wave goodbye to the world in the rear-view mirror
The skyline like a flame, ablaze,
Or like a lantern lit for those still lost in the dead of the night
Lightening strikes darkness once, no thunder, no pain
Have you ever watched the slow thaw?
Waited out in the cold?
I'll settle in that still forest
A phantom, a shadow cast by choice
A place where it's been weeks since I've been around you
Fear fades away, like sunlight when it sinks into the lake
Finally to wake up to stumble home a few weeks too late
I can't marry this place
Let tongues confess our hope for better things
But just roll me away
I need to leave
