Says Life To Death Poem by Renu Beri

Says Life To Death

Says Life to Death, ‘Please, don't take him,
Look how his wife cries.
She'll take care of him while he's ill,
But her heart will break if he dies.'

Says Death to Life, ‘I know, I know.
But what can I do, dear.
You know well it's God's will,
I'm not the real player.'

Says Life to Death, ‘ Look at the man.
He doesn't want to go.
Why don't you go to God's office,
And before the Lord bow.'

Says Death to Life, ‘I'll go, I'll go,
You know, my dear, I'll go.
But the officials have so much to do,
With me they'll have a row.'

Death went to God's office in heaven,
And rang the doorbell twice,
An angel made up for the delay,
By being extremely nice.

Inside God's large personal room,
Death stood with head bent low,
God thought he wanted another life,
So He pointed to the door.

Said Death to the Lord, ' I've come, sir,
On dear Life's behalf.
She wants life for the good man,
Who was christened Mark McCalf.'

The Golden Book being opened by God,
His good name confirmed him a ward,
God said, ' Give him two years more,
Then surely show him heaven's door.'

Down below on the lonely planet,
The doctor decided to charge much more,
His genius had saved the dying man
It was like he'd won a successful war.

Two years later Death came for the man,
Said to have had a miraculous cure,
Death's pace was slow and stealthy,
But approaching quietly he was sure.

Determined at the time we are born,
Each of us with the Lord has a date.
Death, God's emissary, will visit each of us,
To guide us gently to the golden gate.
