Screams Her Name Poem by Brian Sonberg

Screams Her Name

She struggles with her mirror
Tries to find lines on her face
Any mark to indicate
Emotions were present once

She took too much again,
She fears
And not for the first time
She begins to cry

Not out of fear
But because of the
Stranger looking back

Her counterpart laughs
Her wry smile
Knowing and merciless

'You do this to yourself-
we both suffer'

She might be right
She thinks
Through smeared mascara
Fear gives way to anger

The mirror shatters
Her world shatters
Loneliness is warm
And tastes of metal

She is alone
She took too much again,
She fears
Bleeds alone
Into forced sleep
