She had a voice like angels
And the tail of a fish
She had six sisters
Who saw the world above before
Our little mermaid
The first saw a twinkling town
The second beheld a sunrise to rival even coral
Children played in the river and the hills as the third watched
The fourth sister simply watched the sky
The northern lights played on the ice bergs while the fifth sister took her turn
And finally the youngest reached fifteen
She swam to the world above and gazed on a magnificent ship
And the prince who danced upon its deck
A storm rent the world apart and the ship tossed like a cork
The prince was thrown into the water
But humans cannot swim
She fell in love and saved his life
But she couldn't have him
She needed legs for that
So she went to a sea witch
And sold her voice
She bought a pair of legs
But walking felt like knives and coals
But for him?
Anything
And he was looking for her
The girl with the voice of an angel
The girl who had saved him
But no longer could she sing
She came to him and danced like an angel
And he loved her
But only like a friend
And she knew if he ever married
Someone else, she would die
For mermaids have no souls
And he journeyed to a far country
On business for the kingdom
And he met the princess
And mistook her for the one who saved his life
They were to be married that very night
And the little mermaid knew she would die
That night her sisters came to her
Flowing locks cut short
To buy the answer to her death
They gave her a knife
Bright as moonlight
Sharp as silence
And she had to kill the prince
To be a mermaid once more
He whispered the name of his wife
As she hovered over him
Knife in hand
And she couldn't do it
She threw the knife into the sea
And the waves shone red
For a moment
Then as the sun broke the horizon
She dove into the ocean
And she was sea foam
The prince and princess looked for her with sad, dark eyes
And she kissed them on the brow
And flew forth with the wind currents
To the daughters of the air
And she sang once more
In a voice humans cannot hear
The unearthly voice of an angel
