Hell's fires burn with eternal heat;
So fiery was that ocean where Satan fell.
I look to my heart where I greet
Powerful Rage who wields an ensnaring spell.
His intensity matches the blazes of Hell
And stirs the calm sea of my heart.
He whispers his frightening death knell
For where Gentleness has her parts.
I wage war against this conqueror
Lest he lessens me to a savage brute;
May my might to his be all greater
Turning his noisome voice mute.
He leads Phlegethon to consume my being
Yet potent Gentleness shall send him fleeing.
