Second Start Poem by Roxane Spar

Second Start

In a foreign land of steppes and snow
A baby boy is left in sorrow
Born from an unknown love
He will have to wait to get love

His whole body is shaking of fear
Completely lost in this world
Where is this voice he used to hear?
His existence is nothing but a twirl

His stomach is empty, his pants are dirty
He screams as hard as he can
But nobody cares for him, what a pity
How could he understand?

There are millions like him, waiting
He’s just one of them
But how lucky he is, imagine
His trauma will come to an end

Strangers are coming to take him along
They are bringing him home for a life long
On papers he’s already part of their family
But in reality bonding is not that easy

New place, new people, new odors
New sounds, new patterns, new textures
It’s like being on another planet
Is that a sensation you’ve ever felt?

He can’t stand being alone in a room
Constantly needs to be carried around
Insecurity makes him in such a bad mood
From dark memories he is still on the rebound

With plenty of food and care, he recovers quickly
Physically. Psychologically, it’s another story
He has so much to learn, his brain works permanently
People, things, nature, everything is discovery

Turning a tap brings running water
Running water flows between fingers
Fingers can get stuck in drawers
Drawers can be emptied and filled

Little by little he learns to trust his routine
He can call at night, someone will come
His sister is taller than him but she’s also a kid
A daycare is not a diensky dom

After a year he has relearned to cry
He can look at his dad in the eye
He has no more nightmares at night
He’s ready for a second start in life!
