Self And Society Poem by Saraswathih Harigovindan

Self And Society

Society smiled at me when I
was born

Society frowned and mocked my name
as it did not like old names

Society had become modern
so my school was modern and rich

Society was choosy
so my college was carefully chosen

Society was prudish
and decided whom I should walk with

Society was ambitious
and encouraged me to study further

Society is narrow minded
and would like to decide whom I should marry

But does society really care
whether I am happy or if I get a profession?

Self is for society but
Society is not for self.
