Serious Men Poem by Alade Abayomi Idris

Serious Men

I dislike serious men
They make situation graver than it really is
People around them die quicker than they should have
They wear long faces on long robes as mourners do
Talk in strict terms even when it is uncalled for
And wouldn't even laugh at popular jokes
No matter how funny it may be
They betrayed their sinews, and everything that made them
By their senseless display of maturity.

I dislike serious men
Their ugly looks tell people about them in pub
They seat like they are not there
And would want everybody present to be like they are not present
Live with them at your own peril
And woe-betide you if they are your elders, bosses or lords
There is nothing you would be able to do before them
They look at everything very closely as if their lives depend on it
And would want to correct you even when there is no need for it.

I dislike serious men
That they lived their lives like this everyday
Without fun, play and muse
Is what baffles me
They chose to imprison themselves when they were made free
Built high walls that shielded them from others
I dislike serious men because they made everything and everyone looked unserious.
