Settle For Less Poem by R. L. Allen

Settle For Less

why do we spend our whole lives
falling in and out of love
as easy as slipping on a new
pair of socks each morning

and I know it hurts
I know it hurts when
love breaks down the middle
like tearing a sheet of paper
in two and leaving the edges
jagged and raw

but what is it
inside of us
that makes us give up
on the one person
we know was our soulmate

the one person
with whom the memories
were easy and free as birds
flying away into the sun
and bats fluttering around the moon
in the sinking twilight

what made us so reluctant
to admit that he was just
so right for us

but we let him

go

because we were scared to
show our love

deep and heavy
as the ocean full of
silvery gold

and coins
of
hope
and
faith

what made us
so suddenly
willing to

settle
for
less?
