Shallow Breath - Poem by Alice Parris

A gray film covers
The eyes of the
Impoverished.
Hopeless
Lids grow
Heavy watching
Fly-covered
Swollen bellies.
Each shallow breath
Is stingily sponsored
By the air of gloom.
