Shhh... Poem by D A Phinney

Shhh...

When I in my security looked out
My window
Into the streets we once lived on,
And saw silence
Hiding before each corner,
And heard sirens
Banishing the wayfarer,
And saw the machineries of fear
Streaming from the factories,
And knew all was
Of my, by my, for my will,
And saw dark eyes, so far away
I could not touch them,
Seek mine out,
And felt my fingers gently press
And warp the window,
And felt the piercing street-light
In my face,
And shivered with its coldness-
When I in my security looked out,
Then, somehow,
Somebody knocked, said: 'Pull the blind;
You know better.'
