Silence Poem by Rainie Liu

Silence

I'm afraid of the silence
Afraid of the things I might hear
when there is no other sound
but the beating of my heart
Afraid of the words
I try so hard to forget.

I'm afraid of the shouts
that reverberate through my mind
shouting curses and obscenities
Afraid of the taunts
buried down in the noise
brought to the surface once more

So please
Don't leave me in the silence
Don't leave me to fear

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I've noticed the world around me today is constantly filled with noise. Even in the absence of intentional sound, there is the hum of electricity moving in a lamp, or the gentle creaks of the house readjusting, or even the swoosh of cars on the street. Maybe we've placed all this noise there for a reason. I asked myself, 'What would we hear if there was nothing? '
