Silent, Mum! Poem by Suravi Patel

Silent, Mum!

They slapped me on my face
Called me names
and Looked down on me
and I did not speak.

They laughed at me
humiliated me
and pushed me into ditches for fun
and I did not speak.

They said I am no good
and decided for me
and I did not speak.

I stayed silent, mum!
And let things be!
As if I had no rights to be Alive!
As if I am an outsider,
a guest and a nobody!
I stayed silent
As if I deserved it All!
Like a veil around me
I lived life of an untouchable!
I looked happy to others,
Even though each moment I was dying!
I still carried on
And lived life without Complaining!
