Silently Awake Poem by Brian Sonberg

Silently Awake

The serpent lays where once we rested,
Waiting patiently for new prey.
Though the track was often tested,
We thought we should not wait.

Summer was running so quickly,
We tried so hard to make it last.
Time waits for no one, we get too busy.
But eyes know no clock; hearts no collapse.

Looking back, the night was so clear.
We had dreams, but we were lost in each other.
Arms and smiles that could not conceive,
How close the end of summer had grown.

In passion we rose, three times that day,
Breathing; scarcely catching air.
Our lungs' capacities never gained,
But in gasps of dizzy pleasure, desires ebbed.

Many times I've thought back on that day
Way has indeed lead onto way,
But that captured smile and soft, slight moan
Will remain with me, and with me alone.
