Slowly And Without Cause Poem by Sam Holt

Slowly And Without Cause

Eloi, Eloi Lama Sabachthani
My Lord, My Lord, why have you forsaken
Why, oh Lord, have You, this prayer not taken
Please send your angels; Lord, they seem many

Is it honestly you forsaking me
When you leave me here bleeding, all alone
Don’t you hear the urgency of my tone
I call for companionship to be free

I hang here on my cross, not long to live
No world to save and with no faith to prove
Sacrificing all, forbidden to move
My heart pours out like water from a sieve

And, I bleed still, slowly and without cause
Wishing that my heart would give the world pause

And, I wonder where all my dreams went wrong
I wonder why I’m left here, old, alone
Why no one has cared to answer the phone
Wished to be the subject of my heart’s song

Why no pretty face ever looked my way
Was I so disgusting and, oh, so marred
Was my body so horrifically scarred
No one would give my heart the light of day

Once, as a child, my life seemed so free
Years laid ahead of my young heart’s romance
Many were wasted, of youthful advance
But, now days grow dim and for hope I plea

And, I bleed still, slowly and without cause
Wishing that my heart would give the world pause

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Oh how I wish I had acted more swiftly on my youthful loves and romances. But, keeping my options open seemed like the wise thing to do. Waiting it out for the love I was sure to come. Yet, after 31 years, still waiting... I wonder if I have missed her in the milieu of false hopes and hurtful lovers.
