Soap Opera (Episode #1) Poem by Bryan Corbett

Soap Opera (Episode #1)

Soap Opera (episode #1)
'Hudson Fowler IV'

Hudson Fowler sat with his feet up on the desk
once owned by none other than J.P. Morgan
it was his now, he had paid 1.2 million for it
at auction from Sotheby's in a sealed bid

he was on the phone with the Governor of California
looking down on the rest of the Los Angeles skyline
from the fiftieth floor of the blue and silver skyscraper
which he also owned

the deal was all but done
it wasn't a question of whether or not
the Fowler Construction empire would get the contract
to resurface the southbound 405 freeway
they most certainly would

for four generations now
the family had been blessed with every single
California Public Works contract
from San Diego to San Francisco
the devil was only in the details

and this phone call was only a formality
the only thing left was for the lawyers to ink the deal
and that would happen early next week
once these two men settled on the terms
of the kickback to the governor's re-election campaign

the sun was rising in the wee morning hours
of New Year's Day
and it was already shaping up
to be another banner year
for everyone in the Fowler food-chain
