Sonnet: God Gives Us Solace Poem by Dr John Celes

Sonnet: God Gives Us Solace

What can we do if things worse happen fast?
If time and tide favour the smooth-tongued men;
What can we do if eyes become downcast?
If things go 'yond our control and our ken.

Oh God, show me my time, my hour, my day;
Oh, never mind if my attempts have failed;
Let me not grumble; words of dissent say;
Oh, never mind if I feel now assai1ed.

I know my present woe will not last long;
Oh, give me patience God, for some more time;
When will the weather good bring back Bird-song?
Oh, let me never waste my life So prime.

Give me 0 God, the tolerance I need,
And let me say more prayers and the Creed.
