Spectre Poem by Ashley Meers

Spectre

Rating: 5.0

I used to hold you close and watch you
Breathe while you slept.
I watched your chest move up and down
Signalling your existence.

I'd follow you to work.
You wouldn't see me but I always knew
You felt my presence.
I didn't mean to scare you.

Why wouldn't you acknowledge me?
I could never hurt you.
How could it be possible not to be able to feel,
But be in so much pain?

I followed you home and watched as you
Changed. If I had a heartbeat,
It would be beating out of my chest now.
But the only beating I hear

Is the tapping of soil landing on the box
That I lay in.
I scream. Nobody can hear.
It's cold. It's dark.

I hear a faint beeping sound.
Followed by the hollow voice of a man.
I open my eyes and see a bright white light.
And then there's nothing.
