Tonight the sky is aglow
With the fleeting shimmer of northern lights
And the fiery brilliance of countless stars
Scattered across space and time.
Once, long ago, my father spoke
Of a certain solace he found in the stars
And how they helped the ancient mariners at sea
To always find their way back home.
Perhaps that is why I am here
Gazing at clusters frozen in time
In hope that somehow
I will find my way
Through the perilous sea of life.
Or perhaps I am here to share
In the quiet solace he once felt
Knowing that someday
When I am gone
My child will inherit this sky.
