Stillness Poem by Dave Dunn

Stillness

Stillness

I feel that heavy stillness
It has come to me before
Something new has happened
Who will be next at my door
Will the phone ring in a minute
How I wish I could be sure

~~~
Night calls in the nineties never bore good news
Some made in the noughties just brought in the blues
~~~

Still that sense is lingering
Why should it seem so mean
I rack my mind and ponder
But nothing is yet to be seen
Come on if you've got to
Before I sleep and dream

~~~
Time has come for hearing good news you might well think
Long ago I poured away the bad stuff down my sink
~~~
Eventide is now a coming
And with it a freshening breeze
Can it blow away that feeling
If I grovel will it please
Take away that stillness
Though the pollen makes us sneeze

~~~
Get the anti-histamine tablets out from the old bureau
Swallow one each morning until all these symptoms go
~~
But still when the window closes
That sense has not quite gone
I'm searching for the mobile
To see if a text has come
An empty screen blinks at me
Don't keep me waiting for so long
~~~

Where are those pills for my questless bouts of hi anxiety
Fluoxetine capsules to melt in my mouth full of hot tea

~~~
'Hi' said the telephone
When at last it rang
'There's news for you
From far away' it sang
Just then the signal failed
So I still don't know where I am
