I totally understand the last two lines. The poet is humble, realizing that emotional equilibrium and adaptability are part of intelligence. Some people have a natural endowment to study well because they don't blow themselves off course in a storm of emotions. Learning happens when one is immersed in a process. The poet stands outside of the process of institutional learning and ticks off the days. So she admits she has failings in this respect. However, the ability to stand outside of a process can be part of learning on a larger scale later. Harsh consequences are instructive and emotions can be adjusted. Of all the lessons learned, compassion is most admirable.
