Sudden Grief Poem by Mary Champion

Sudden Grief

Sometimes I have found
that grief is not a constant thing.
It comes and it goes,
sometimes striking out of the blue,
sometimes prompted by
a sudden fleeting memory
of the loved one lost;
an unbidden desire to share
an anecdote or reflection,
a witticism
that would have triggered their laughter.
And, decades later,
a faint shadow of old sorrow
may blot out the sun
for a sharp, heart-rending moment.
Grief waits in the wings
while you carry on with your life,
then ambushes you.
That's just the way it is - sometimes.
