Sunflowers Poem by Martin Ward

Sunflowers

Now is the time
to sow sunflowers.

A single flower
cheers the heart
and lifts the soul.

Fields of golden sunflowers
amaze the eyes
with their brightness.

Beautiful: be it more or less.

Sunflowers are spiritual:
symbols of faithfulness.

Loyal to one
who is brighter still.

Giving oils and seed
without self-will.

Nature's bird feeders;
Cholesterol lowerers;
eye pleasers.

Brightening walls
of art galleries
or shocking fields.

Sunflowers have
something for us all
and abundant yields.

Hope of nations
standing in winter;
staying tall.

Although their heads
hang like Christ
Upon The Cross,

the sum is no loss,
for the seed
of life awaits

the warmth
and season to come.
