Sunrise Over The Airport, Sunrise Over Me Poem by Gregory Grinham

Sunrise Over The Airport, Sunrise Over Me

I have walked through nights
that never seemed to end,
nights that taught me
how to stand my ground
when no one else could see
the child I was protecting.

But here—
in this Western Sydney dawn—
the sky lifts its colours
like a quiet apology
for all the years
I carried darkness alone.

The cranes rise like old scars,
still standing, still useful,
still part of the landscape
that shaped me.
I don't hate them anymore.
They built something in me too.

The first light spills over the runway,
and I feel it land in my chest—
a warmth I once thought
was meant for other people.
But no.
It's mine.
It always was.

I look at this horizon
and see the truth of my life:
I have risen from places
that tried to keep me small,
and now I stand here,
unhidden, unashamed,
watching a new world
take its first breath.

This sunrise is not just the sky.
It is me—
finally stepping into the day
I deserved all along.
