Rating: 5.0

We were strangers -
you and I -
just six months ago.
It’s amazing how that time
has just flown by.
What was it
that brought us together
and bonded us as friends?
Was it a common complaint
about work ethics and how things got handled there?
Was it an overall view of life in general?
As my friend,
I’ve grown accustomed to you
always asking for a cigarette, a match, or a quarter for a phone call.
I’ve gotten used to you
calling me “Shorty” and being peeved about something.
I’ve learned to ignore your
warning that there was a “Lobby Rush! ”
I’ve come to expect that on my way out,
at the end of my shift,
I’d hear you call out -
“Hey Shorty! Seeee yaaaaa! ”
I wasn’t prepared to hear
that you’d be leaving us already.
I’m not ready to let go just yet.
I understand that you are headed
to a better life for yourself in Florida.
But, before you head out that door and go on your way,
I want you to know that I wish you well,
and that hopefully, very soon to
“Seeeee yaaaaa! ”
