The lovely title and the refrain express succinctly the mood of lazy delight and complete absence of fear. Nothing disturbs the quietude without and inner worlds seem to be at one with the night too. Night itself is personified in the last stanza as if it were a representative person lounging against a railing, a person probably not thinking just taking in the atmosphere as we readers do also. In contrast, SYMBOLS OF THE NIGHT is a poem of headlong, madcap activity. Nothing stays still long. Creatures are bursting out of hiding places to leap into others. It's as if there is some big game being played, like hide and seek, but everyone's hiding and no one's seeking. This frenetic activity of goblins, bats, ghosts, etc. makes me want to return to the calm of sweet welcoming summer night and just bliss out for a couple of hours.
I clicked on this poem because it was near the recent poem which ends DUSK GREW SHORTER (which of course means NIGHT GREW LONGER) . I remember reading and commenting on this poem earlier, Sure enough my re-reading brought back its delights and my comment is still printed below it. It's a beautiful poem. Re-read it yourself. You deserve the glow it will light up inside of you.
