Symphonic Chanting Poem by Elia Michael

Symphonic Chanting

I listened to a symphony
Of Orthodox and Islamic
Chanting from Ayia Eirini
It was such beautiful music

The contrast between west and east
Was such a delight to my ears
It was more a musical feast
So spiritual my eyes had tears

The bass voices of the male choir
Resonated in the high space
The Muslim chanters' even higher
Two faiths together in one place

I almost believed that we could
All live peacefully side by side
I imagined a world where good
Was practised with love far and wide

I listened to haunting music
A sweet melodious fusion
I was hypnotised by magic
What a beautiful illusion!
