Tao Bear Poem by Alla Bozarth

Tao Bear

The ancients knew you
as oldest of ancestors.
Sent from heaven
you teach balance
and harmony,
union of opposites.

Here in your tree house,
small black and white bear,
you curl into a circle,
one black eye centered
in your white face,
one white cheek centered
between your black paws
— perfection.

In your home of perpetual
green mist, you feast
by sheer labor and wisdom,
moving up and down and across
the mountains with the seasons.

You come from God
and teach the Tao,
the Way of Heaven on Earth
— respect, solitude,
serenity and play.

When your world becomes
white snow on black branches,
white water on black rock,
you understand the secret,
its rhythms in your life.
You move with the movement
of the Whole —
in communion with nature,

the life-source within you,
you move and make do with
the new season, bear of bliss
in your being, you nobly bear
what you have become —
a precious part of the bitter beauty of winter.
