Raise and nurture
a piglet into a pig
Water him, provide straw,
maybe feed him figs.
As with their care
he grows quite big
he finds they care
not a twig.
Poet's Notes about The Poem
A local newspaper,2 car dealers, and the Portage County-Randolph County Fair in Ohio together
promoted the auction and slaughter of slave animals. The directions for the auction state that all animals are terminal
and must be 'harvested' murdered within 45 days. The newspaper is the Record Courier of Ravenna and Kent Ohio.
Sponsors included the Portage Community Bank, Ameriprise Financial, and 2 local car dealers.
From the auction information sheet:
'ALL HOGS, RABBITS & POULTRY AND ALL CHAMPIONS ARE TERMINAL. Ewe lambs & doe goats can be purchased and self hauled. Wether goats & lambs can be self hauled, but must be harvested within 45 days of auction. Sale clerk must be notified on sale day so proper paperwork can be completed.'
