Ted Poem by Nick Welch

Ted

He's old now, forgotten.
A distant memory in an age that doesn't care.
He sees the world through one glass eye
That hangs too loosely by a single thread.

His fur's worn thin; his stitches frayed.
But once he kept her secrets,
shared her laughter,
dried her tears.
A silent confidante exchanging unseen smiles.
He was her one true friend.

Tonight, he shares the silence all alone,
And dreams the laughter of a little girl
That echos through the years.
He knows he'll see her once again
The girl he knew,
The girl who hides inside the woman now.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem was inspired by a photograph of a friend. When she was born she was given a teddy bear that she still had. The poem imagines that toy after its owner has long since grown up.
