Terrible Beauty Poem by Mary Champion

Terrible Beauty

Your beauty,
your piercing beauty
which should surely delight me,
brings only torment -
searing my soul
with unnameable pain.

What ancient memories
are awakened
when that aching longing
wrenches my heart?

What happened,
in some long gone age
whose echoes
you bring to mind?

Your beauty,
your breath-taking, heart-stopping beauty
is unbearable.
