That Rusts Iron Poem by Francis Duggan

That Rusts Iron

Though time that rusts iron has become your foe
Your past it is with you from the long ago
For as long as your gift of memory you retain
Memories of what was in you will remain
Though in distance ageing quite far from your first hometown
You remember the old streets you often walked up and down
Though your friends of the past there you may not recognize by sight today
Since from there you have been quite a long time away
And since you have not seen them since in your life's prime
Faces do change over decades of time
They remain as they were in your memory
As you only remember them as they used to be
But memory at times it can seem rather strange
As it does not always allow for the difference that can come with change.
