The Addict Poem by Helen Yeo

The Addict

Rating: 4.0

Floating blissfully
In a dream-like plane
Where physical objects
Took a surreal aspect
Beautiful, ethereal
Mundane ugliness crumbled
Happy, carefree
In giddying ecstasy
He was rudely dragged
Into awareness
As traces of cocaine
Evaporated
Roughly shoved
To a contrasting place
Where ugliness
Reared its taunting head
Finding himself lying
Amid dirt and garbage
The stench of rotting
Coordinating
With the pain in his chest
He sweated and trembled
His body hopelessly enfeebled
For an escape route
He desperately needed
Another smoke.
