The Birdie Is Gone Poem by Sookdeo Manansingh

The Birdie Is Gone

The birdie is gone, who will now carry on?
What happens to the leaves going with the breeze?
Now I must open my eyes

Oh! great calypso king
your words will continue to sting
inside your grave steelpan will play
the earth will move to make a new way

Listen to my words and do as I say
I walk the same path day by day
Listen to my words and do as I say
forever these words will echo in the dark

The shoes I leave will dance on stage
until someone else will turn a new page
my calypso will forever remain
to flow with the bubbles going in the drain
Upon the red carpet my blood will flow
a life well lived for everyone to follow

Listen to my words and do as I say
I walk the same path day by day
Listen to my words and do as i say
forever these words will echo in the dark

My soul will only rest in peace
when I can hear of the music that doesn't cease
oh father of my shadow send me your light
I want to hold on to the reigns and continue the fight
Our culture will spread from shore to shore
for others to imitate from door to door
Let's play on, Let's play on

Listen to my words and do as I say
I walk the same path day by day
Listen to my words and do as I say
forever these words will echo in the dark
