The Box Poem by Lilyann Monahan

The Box

Rating: 5.0

It started when I was a child of two,
I was wanting attention, as many girls do.
So soon we were playing hide and go seek,
after he came home from work, I'd hide and not speak.
He would look all over for me everywhere
and when he found me, I cried and stared.
One day he walked in with a cardboard box,
and I was wearing pajamas and socks.
He placed the box on the top of the freezer.
My young curiosity, thought he was a teaser.
What was this new game we would play every night?
I found out hide and go seek would have a new light.
The very next night, I ran so fast,
I slid as he came and knew my spot wouldn't last.
I didn't cry anymore, he had a plan.
He picked me up, he was my favorite man.
He placed me in that box up high,
it was so much fun, I could reach the sky.
I hid from my family, my dad had a grin,
and I never felt so much love in my skin.
He called me every day, pretending to be another,
he would disguise his voice, and ask my Mother.
He called himself Willie, and even though I knew,
I kept the secret, so Dad would have fun too.
