The Boy Poem by Ruby Dodd

The Boy

Tired and hungry, softly crying was the little boy in red
As he sat there on that sidewalk that had last night had been his bed

And I saw him there this morning when I walked that way to work
All his clothes were torn and tattered and his face was streaked with dirt

Stooping down, I asked him softly could he tell me what was wrong
'I can't find my mom ' he whispered ' I don't know where she has gone

' had told her I was hungry just before she went away'
Can you find her for me mister' were the words he had to say

So, I put my arms around him, wiped the teardrops from his eyes
Said ' I 'll find her for you sonny, I am sure that she's nearby'

To the cafe on the corner I then to hurried just to see
If his mom was bying breakfast, did she need some help from me

But alas! No one had seen her, didn't know where she had gone
So I brought some milk and crackers took them back to her young son

Now I face a big dilemma, only answer I could see
Was to take him from the squalor bring him home to stay with me.

Then I'd help to find his momma, help them find a better way
To exist then on that sidewalk and find happines some day.
