The Caged Bird Poem by Jerusha Melanie

The Caged Bird

Rating: 5.0

They kept her inside the cage
She cried not to get tied
Inside the walled golden stage.

They fed her with the finest of wheat
Dressed her and crowned her
And gave her meat to eat.

But how can a bird, born for joy
Be pushed inside a cage
And be showcase toy.

Still no one heard her cry
For they were very selfish
And kept her in the cage to die.

Yet finally she managed to get freed.
Began to fly high
In search of the dirtiest seed.

She said 'We birds are made for fly.
Even if we're sold to the cage of the finest gold
I'm happy with this polluted sky.

We're designed to fight against gravity
So please hear my plea
Don't keep us in captivity.
