The sea is a ravenous beast-
growling, grey, gargantuan.
She rolls across the beach each day,
slavering, voracious jaws agape-
hour after hour she gnaws
the tumbling pebbles,
the swirling grains of sand.
Insatiable-
insensitive to everything
but her own appetite.
And when the harsh wind howls
and the moon is submerged beneath storm clouds,
she will hurl herself even further,
shaking her spray over the sea walls,
dashing her head against the cliffs-
roaring like a wounded tigress.
But there are some days,
when the wind shrinks to a gentle breeze,
when the rough grasses
play their softly reedy tune,
then, she slumbers like a well-fed babe -
eyes closed,
head resting on the warm sand,
dreaming up ripples and lazy waves.
