The Dance Poem by Gill O'Neill

The Dance

Rating: 4.5

I brace myself for
Pain,
As the inevitable dance begins
Again,
The military two-step
Of domestic strife.

Conscious of trouble,
The air bristles and vibrates,
As the careful harmony
Of our pas de deux
Falters,
Helplessly.

Then all our steps
Go out of sync.

You wrap your self
In silent immobility,
While I,
Forever stupid,
Dance a giddy jig,
The prima ballerina now
But with no
Style!

And then it comes to me...
Even when having rows,
It takes two
To tango.

Gill, welcome to Poem Hunter. This poem appears to be the first that you have posted on this site. Congratulations on a good start. Looking forward to reading many more of your poems in the future! I like all the dance terms you used in the poem to go along with your title: two-step pas de deux jig tango Well done!

A very clever poem...great use of metaphor dancing. It can look so beautiful and effortless when you have a partner and he's in syncs with your movements. Keep sharing
